DODA.

RENATA KIM: HOW DO YOU FEEL IN THE ROLE OF POLISH MOTHER TERESA?

DODA*: I don't try to play the role of Mother Teresa. I just want to save my fiance's life and make the most of the fact that I am popular and save the lives of other people. That's all. I have nothing to do with Mother Teresa. I am still promiscuous, provocative and scandalous. But one thing does not exclude the other.

DON'T YOU FEEL SATISFIED WHEN YOU CAN HEAR PEOPLE SAY THAT BEING A BONE MARROW DONOR HAS BECOME FASHIONABLE THANKS TO YOU?

No, I don't. I would be happy if Adam's hospital next door neighbour could say: ''Thanks, Doda. I'm having a transplant surgery in a minute because my Donor has just been found thanks to you and Adam.'' I remember the first day following Adam's diagnosis. I left his room and felt enormous fatigue. I set on my heels and dropped my head. Then a lady visiting her husband came up to me, stroked my hair and walked away. It was her gesture of solidarity with another individual, which is so important when someone's life is at stake. I want to inspire such solidarity by encouraging people to register themselves as prospective bone marrow donors.

YOU ARE SAID TO HAVE SENT AN SMS TO SOME OF YOUR NEAREST ACQUAINTANCES ASKING THEM TO REGISTER THEMSELVES AS PROSPECTIVE BONE MARROW DONORS.

Soon after Adam's announcement that he had come down with leukaemia, a lot of foundations asked me if I would agree to encourage people to become prospective donors , under their patronage. I chose the foundation called DKMS, the biggest amd most recommended by doctors. I arranged a dinner meeting with the manager of this foundation. She gave me some information concerning leukaemia rate in Poland. What I heard from her made my jaw drop because never before had I realized the scale of the problem. She told me that it is dozens of thousands of people that die of leukaemia in Poland every year so I quickly calculated that every hour, one person falls ill. And, at that moment, I spontaneously sent SMSs to 20 or 30 people who I knew very well: ''Adam suffers from leukaemia and he is in need of bone marrow. IF YOU WANT TO SAVE HIS LIFE, please register yourself on the website WWW.dkms.pl, fast forward. Please help me, Doda”. It happened on 6 AUGUST, A FEW DAYS after I had taken Adam to hospital.

TWO MONTHS HAVE PASSED SINCE THAT MOMENT AND 90 THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY REGISTERED THEMSELVES.

Now it's already one hundred thousand and I hope at least THE SAME NUMBER of prospective donors have registered themselves on the websites of other foundations.

DO YOU KNOW THAT NO DONORS ARE FOUND FOR HALF OF THE POLISH PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM LEUKAEMIA?

Yes, I do. The manager of the DKMS told me even a more depressing story; it is of common occurrence that 19-year-old teenagers register themselves and then their mothers answer the phones from the foundation saying: ''Sorry, but my daughter is having her matura exams and I don't want her to be bothered by transplants. And that teenager is just one person in a million that is genetically matched with the particular patient . People are not aware of the fact that their decisions could prevent others from recovery. If such teenage girl were to become Nergal's donor, believe me, I would knock at her door and make her change her mind. BELIEVE ME, I have a special gift for encouraging people. ( LAUGHTER)

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT ADAM WAS ILL?

We were on holidays in Greece. The heat was enormous and Adam could not breathe. To make matters worse, his temperature was 38 degrees and it hadn't dropped for two weeks. We came back to Poland but the symptoms didn't disappear. We thought he had come down with a tropical disease as a result of numerous concert tours he had given all over the world so we decided to visit the hospital of tropical illness. There, the doctors just had a look at Adam and they didn't let him go. What I, the amateur Dr Quinn, perceived as a tropical bacterium, turned out to be the classic leukaemia symptoms.

HOW DID YOU RECEIVE THE DIAGNOSIS?

Not bad. I didn't think: My God, why is it him? Why has it affected us? Why just now? Nothing like that. Things are as they are. If it is leukaemia, let's fight and beat it.

WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY ''FIGHTING' ?

Since that moment, all my actions have been concentrated upon one thing; Adam's recovery. I've got fanastic material for the album which was supposed to be released soon after summer vacation. The shooting session for the album had already been planned ; a brilliant video clip and seven cosmic covers. I put everything aside and I didn't care a bit. My phonographic company gave way to dispair but I didn't give a damn about it. As a matter of fact, it was only my concerts that I didn't put aside because they let me stop thinking about Adam's illness for a few moments. It is the time I am only with my fans. When I finish my show, I feel such huge energy and power as though I had followed a five litre glucose application. And besides, I try not to think about anything else because I know that if I let other things distract me, I will lose the battle. I can't let myself become overwhelmed by stress, adrenaline or anger. Adam has fans all over the world and, believe me, he hasn't received a single e-mail containing bad wishes. People living abroad register themselves in the DKMS as prospective donors. In Poland, every second e-mail addressed to Adam contains a message like that: ''Be damned. You had better die. Our Lord has punished you. '' or even: '' If only I could, I would give you some poison.'' THIS IS THE MEANING OF LIFE IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES.

WHAT IS NERGAL'S APPROACH TO SUCH LETTERS ?

He finds them funny so he keeps smiling. But, honestly, I don't believe he remains completely indifferent. I think he must be sad. However, I must admit I get furious, which seriously distracts me and I know I shouldn't let myself be distracted by anything.

I BET SOME TV PROGRAMMES INCLUDING ''MISJA SPECIALNA'' WHICH UNJUSTLY ACCUSE YOU OF ENCOURAGING THE POLES TO DONATE THE BONE MARROW FOR GERMANS ALSO DISTRUCT YOU, DON'T THEY ?

These are the lamentable reactions of mediocre people. They are really above my fashion but, unluckily, they could badly affect the patients. As a matter of fact, it is nothing more than the propagation of national phobias and hatred. We should join together in fighting against certain diseases. In reality, some people intend to divide us. Thanks to the DKMS's access to the International Bone Marrow Donors Database, a lot of Polish patients were cured and due to the shortage of prospective donors in Poland, they often found the foreign ones including Germans. Believe me, it is really of secondary importance for the patients whether their lives have been saved by the Polish donors or the foreign ones, and if you register yourself in the DKMS you could also help someone from another country because health does not have nationality.

IS SUCH SITUATION JUST A TEST FOR ALL YOUR FRIENDS?

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to all mass media and institutions which have decided to support my actions as well as my friends and relatives who have done their best to help me. Of course, such a traumatic moment is the best test of true friendship. Unfortunately, contrary to my expectations, a few people have disappointed me; even those I used to rely on. On the other hand, I've been able to draw some useful conclusions from their reactions; I've sieved out the most precious gemstones from those who do not deserve to be called friends because they have proved to be false or highly hypocritical. Luckily, the former preponderate over the latter and they could form a really imposing necklace. ( laughter)

HAVING HEARD THE FATAL DIAGNOSIS FROM THE DOCTOR, MOST PEOPLE BEGIN TO SURF THE NET IN SEARCH OF INFORMATION CONCERNING THEIR DISEASE. DID YOU MAKE USE OF THE INTERNET?

No, we didn't. Our approach is the following: things are as they are so we have to take certain actions. We listened to the doctors and accepted the treatment that they recommended. A lot of people keep asking us why we didn't decide to treat Adam in Switzerland or any other foreign country. From our perspective, this would have been pointless for at least a few reasons. Firstly, chemotherapy is the same in Switzerland and in Poland. Secondly, I wouldn't be able to spend with him 12 hours a day , his mother wouldn't visit him every day, he wouldn't be able to play the guitar with his friend or watch Polish programmes on TV. You are ill abroad and you know nobody from the foreign hospital staff. Psychological well-being and support of your nearest and dearest make half of your success on the way to recovery.

DO YOU TALK WITH THE DOCTORS ABOUT THE PROGNOSIS ?

You can't be serious! None of the doctors will make a prognosis in the case of leukaemia. They can only tell you what is going to happen in a WEEK or a MONTH, no more than HALF A YEAR. Some patients happen to recover soon after chemotherapy, others have to undergo a few transplant surgeries.

HAVEN'T YOU ASKED THE DOCTORS ABOUT ADAM'S CHANCE OF RECOVERY?

No, we haven't. Perhaps it is a common reaction but it is unlike me or Adam to ask the doctors what is going to happen with him. I tell him every day that it is his organism so he should know better, and he believes me. The power of self-suggestion is enormous. It sounds really incredible how many negative changes in your organism can be effectively cured by your mind power. You are the master of your organism and you decide what is happening to it. This is why I was sure from the very beginning that Adam would recover but, of course, it is a hard experience for me to see him suffering.Whenever I visit him in hospital I begin to suffer from physical pain.

WHAT DO YOU COME ACROSS THERE ?
Death every second day, pain and fever, everything. But I try not to think about this. I try to put aside such thoughts because they are completely useless. It is only the advantages of this experience that I concentrate on.

DON'T PRETEND YOU ARE SO BRAVE. DO YOU REALLY KNOW ANY ADVANTAGES OF COMING DOWN WITH LEUKAEMIA?

Our decision to go to Greece is a good example. Otherwise, Adam wouldn't have seen the doctor and he would have continued to feel weak and feverish and perhaps he would have given some concerts. Thanks to the Greek heat, we sooner discovered the problem and we quickly went to hospital where he was diagnosed and then treated. Secondly, we know that leukaemia is like lottery; today it is me that could fall ill, tomorrow it is you; every hour there is one more patient. And this is another advantage; Adam is really happy that he can help so many people. Thanks to the fact that he is ill in hospital, a lot of people will have a chance to recover. This proves invaluable to him. Let's bear in mind that Adam is irreligious and he does not think of his actions in line with The Ten Commandments or any other religious rules or values that he should follow. He keeps thinking in the following way; I happened to fall ill but I'll try to do my best to benefit from this experience and I'll let others benefit from it as well. If I only can help anyone, I won't hasitate to do it. And it is not because I fear that I will be punished by God or because I'm looking forward to receiving a reaward. It is just bacause I feel like doing so.

NERGAL UNDERGOES THE THIRD CHEMOTHERAPY. HOW DOES HE FACE IT?

Probably not bad. But it is worth noting that chemotherapy is nothing more than some poison inserted to our organism to destroy it, so it is hard to say that everything has gone well. The only thing Adam had asked for was some anti-vomiting pills. Whenever I'm in Gadańsk, I'm staying with hiim all day and everything is OK.

AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

And what do you do with your man on free Sunday ? We keep relaxing, making fun, watching stupid programmes, playing games and cards, READING BOOKS, hugging each other and sleeping.

DO YOU TEND TO REPLACE NURSES ?

Are you kidding? I say ''Adaś, could you please make me a sandwich? I'm hungry. And you know what ?He is making a sandwich! (laughter).

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HIS ILLNESS?

All the time, every day. There are no other subjects. Even when I'm staying in Warsaw, Adam calls to tell me what is going on with him. EVERY DAY he discovers his organism again. Never in his life has he thought that certain spots on his body could hurt so severely. He finds such discoveries really exciting and he wants to share his emotions with me. He has become an explorer of his own organism.

HOW DOES HE DESCRIBE HIS AILMENTS?

What a question! His voice is filled with pain, exhaustion, fatigue, frustration, desperation...Sometimes there is no life in it and no will to fight.

AND HOW DO YOU REACT ?

I tell him: ''Adaś, just think about the whole life that is ahead of us. Compared with it, this illness is just one episode. You must beat it no matter how painful it is. Be prepared for the worst during the next few months but finally you will recover.'' And then he takes this life threating illness as the challenge he must face. When he describes what hurts him, I tell him : ''Yes, I know but you must move forward, you must learn how to live with this.'' And I know what I say because I also suffer from terrible spinal pain which is incurable. Everybody is surprised at my cheerful reactions but I must tell you that every moment your pain is relieved, you feel fantastic, even if you have no friends, ambitions and you are short of cash. You start appreciating the fact that you can breathe with ease and walk without accompaning pain. And this is what fills me with joy and enthusiasm. When you are healthy, you tend not to notice this physical comfort; you just take it for granted.…

WHAT DO YOU FEEL WHILE YOU ARE LOOKING AT HIM LYING, WEAKENED IN HIS HOSPITAL PYJAMAS ?

Adam doesn't wear hospital pyjamas. He is dressed in his T-shirts covered with the images of satan. He is hairless but we have invented our own anti-hair loss treatment. Having heard the diagnosis, I told him: '' Come on, Adam, I'll make you an Irokez. Let's cut your hair short and you won't have to worry about losing it. I bet it will be fantastic. He said it was a good idea so I bought a hair shaving machine and I made him a brilliant hairstyle. But to take things more seriously, no change in appearance will affect your perception of a man if he is strong and inspires admiration and respect; your approach towards him wouldn't change even if half of his face was covered with a nasty beard. Suppose I fell ill and my appearance changed dramatically, would I stop being charming and UNIQUE?No, I wouldn't. THE AURA YOU HAVE CREATED will never disappear due to any illness.

WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW IS...WHILE YOU ARE LOOKING AT HIM...

No, he does not evoke pity, if this is what yoy mean. Of course, I feel sorry seeing him suffer but he does not evoke compassion because he doesn't go on moaning and complaining.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN TO HIM?

No, I'm not! It is since my childhood that I've been trying to put aside bad thoughts. I don't let them enter my head so that they couldn't get materialized. Isn't it pointless to fear ? The idea if sitting anxiously in a playpen and moaning does not appeal to me. I believe in the power of positive thinking. I know Adam will be discharged from hospital at the beginning of the next year , I know we shall spend Valentine's Day together and I know we shall go to the club for non-smokers on my birthday. That's all.

DO YOU KNOW THAT SUCH APPROACH IS RATHER NAIVE?

I don't give a damn! You might call it naive but I find it beneficial for Adam!

DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE DETAILS OF FURTHER TREATMENT?

Adam is awaiting his transplant operation but it will be possible when the remission occurs. It is only on the condition that there is no evidence of cancer cells that the bone marrow transplant surgery can be performed. And then? It is time for a crazy rollercoaster ride. After the transplant surgery, it is even a runny nose that could prove fatal so the patient will have to be kept in total izolation for a few months and even I will be prevented from approaching him.

ARE YOU NOW ANXIOUSLY LOOKING FORWARD TO A DONOR?

No, there is no need to be anxious because we started looking for them three days after the diagnosis had been made. And now two months have passed. We are waiting for the donor but we take it easy. Every day, the doctors keep looking through the available bone marrow donors datebase. It is really hard work because it involves the necessity to find your identical twin with the same genetic code. The chances vary from one to 20 thousand to 1 to a few million.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO PERFORM TRASPLANT SUGERY IF THE DONOR'S GENETIC CODE IS NOT IDENTICAL?

Sometimes the transplantations are performed when the compatibility ratio is like 8 to 10 or 9 to 10 but the patient will have to take pills all life long so that the organism would not reject the transplant. The side effects include serious weakening of the immune system. Such patients complain of sinusitis, frequent pains and other ailments. It is much better if the genetic code is identical. We are waiting for such a donor and we hope we shall soon find one.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE SUCH UNSHAKABLE CERTAINTY FROM ?

And how could I know I would do a revolution in the Polish show business ? You just know about such things... Sorry, but even now, I can't resist being a bit proud.

HAVE YOU BEEN CRYING SINCE THE TIME THE DIAGNOSIS WAS MADE?

Of course, I have. More than once. But I didn't want him to see me crying because that certainly wouldn't help him. My chest hurt and I couldn't help crying. I kept looking at him. His lungs were filled with two litres of water. And there was a pipe emerging from his lungs. He could hardly breathe. As a matter of fact, he was almost out of breath. Then I left his hospital room and I started crying. By the way, at the beginning we happened to cry together a few times; you know, just a little, symbolically. We had been together for 18 months but I must have forgotten about it. A year and a half anniversary of our relationship. On that they, I went to visit Adam and I fell asleep. When I woke up half an hour later, I saw him standing above me with all those drip- bags and carrying a birthday cake with one and a half candles. Then I burst into tears.

HAVE YOU BEEN ACCUSED OF TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ADAM'S ILLNESS TO PROMOTE YOURSELF?

No,I haven't. My trademark does not need any promotion. It is others that promote themselves at my expense. Only the worst bastard would go on exploring such traumatic experience where human life is at stake . I would give you back the title of Mother Teresa if only ADAŚ could make a recovery... IF I KEEP SILENT, I WON'T FIND ANY BONE MARROW. Of course, I could follow A FEW WELL-KNOWN PEOPLE who have overcome fatal illnesses but now they no longer want to draw any conclusions from their experience. I know I MUST RESPECT SUCH APPROACH, but from my perspective, it is wicked and shameful. People who are widely known and recognized, actors, singers etc. have gained popularity thanks to those who want to watch them, come to their concerts or plays. It is us, the audience and the fans that are part of their success. If those famous people happen to come down with a serious illness WHOSE PUBLICITY COULD PROVE HELPFUL TO OTHERS, THEY SHOULDN'T HASITATE TO DO IT. THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH OTHERS ARE JUST SELFISH. OF COURSE, I DO NOT EXPECT PEOPLE WHO ARE IN PUBLIC LIFE TO INFORM THE TABLOIDS ABOUT EVERY FLU OR MINOR AILMENT THAT THEY UNDERGO. BUT IT IS THE WELL KNOWN PEOPLE THAT CAN REVOLUTIONIZE OUR APPROACH TO NUMEROUS ASPECTS OF LIFE AND INSPIRE POSITIVE CHANGES. IF OUR OWN MISFORTUNES COULD PROVE HELPFUL TO OTHERS, WHY NOT HELP THEM?

IS PROVOCATIVE AND SCANDALOUS DODA GOING TO CHANGE HERSELF AND BECOME MORE SERIOUS DUE TO NERGAL'S ILLNESS?

Not in the least ! And furthermore, I will go on telling my fans : BE CAREFUL ABOUT YOUR HEALTH, but also enjoy yourselves and make the most of your life; wear what you like because tomorrow you may have to wear hospital pyjamas or a suit in your coffin. Nobody will die instead of us so why should we listen to those who keep telling us how to go on living.
